What's ZUMBA, you ask?
What happens when a young South American fitness instructor forgets his music and needs to teach his class? A fitness craze is born! In the 1990s in Cali, Columbia, Beto Perez entered his aerobics class only to find he had forgotten his music. His solution was to use whatever cassette tapes he had available. The improvised dance- fitness moves that accompanied his favorite traditional Latin music soon became a popular regular class. After bringing this class to the United States, Beto partnered with two entrepreneurs, and created an infomercial selling videos. Within three years, Zumba Fitness® was training instructors to teach the fitness party that is now being taught at over 60,000 locations in 105 countries, to 7.5 million participants every week. Why is that? Latin rhythms (like the salsa, with its roots in Cuba, and the Dominican merengue) are infectious. They are also rich with history: the Columbian cumbia orgininated in the sugar cane fields amongst slaves, who were tethered by a ball and change, yet still found the joy and courage to dance. Adding to the appeal, other International rhythms are included, like the Spanish flamenco, Middle Eastern belly dance, and even the Hebrew horah “Hava Nagila.” Beto's mistake of 20 years ago is now keeping people of all ages moving - in classes, at clubs, at parties, and in their homes - on six continents.
